Sustainable Maldives: discovering the island of Fulhadhoo

8 days

The Maldives have changed over the years and luxurious private islands are no longer the only option. It is now possible to offer alternative accommodation to eco-conscious travelers who wish to discover the traditional lifestyle and the wonderful underwater world of the Maldives, without giving up the quality standards typical of beach resorts. This is a new and exclusive itinerary designed by us to allow you to discover one of the most authentic islands of the Maldives in the Baa Atoll, which in 2011 was declared a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve thanks to the extraordinary biodiversity found in these waters.

The Baa Atoll is made up of 105 coral reefs, representing a reef surface (among the most beautiful in the Maldives archipelago) extending over more than 260 km². For this reason, the numerous resorts and guesthouses located here mainly host snorkeling and scuba diving enthusiasts eager to capture unforgettable experiences at some of the most renowned dive sites, including whale shark sightings and hundreds of manta rays gliding undisturbed.

This itinerary begins with a visit to Hulhumalé, in the North Malé Atoll. It is an artificial island reclaimed from the sea to provide alternative living space outside of Malé; Hulhumalé represents the ideal base as a starting or ending point for a holiday. From here you will discover the nearby island of Villimalé, where our guide will accompany you to learn about the coral conservation work carried out by a well-known local NGO. This will introduce you to the importance of preserving coral reefs within the Maldivian archipelago ecosystem.

On the second day we will move to the beautiful island of Fulhadhoo, whose beach ranks among the 30 most beautiful beaches in the world thanks to its unspoiled beauty. The white shores are covered with fine sand, while the horizon and ocean shine with an incredibly vibrant blue. Fulhadhoo is the only inhabited island in its surroundings. The local people live in a picturesque village to the east, mainly engaged in fishing or traditional handicrafts. The absence of modern distractions is perfect for those seeking privacy and a deep connection with nature. With swaying palm-lined paths and surrounded by a magnificent turquoise ocean, it is a true paradise. The island is much longer than it is wide, which means a refreshing sea breeze flows across it as you walk to and from the beach. The local village hosts 250 people and is located in the eastern part of the island, while the rest of the island is characterized by small agricultural plots, tropical forest, and white sandy beaches.

Our guesthouse has been selected to offer a balance between comfort, good service, local atmosphere, and good cuisine. All rooms are equipped with private bathroom, air conditioning, ceiling fans, and free Wi-Fi, while water, tea, and coffee are always available. In this tropical paradise you will have the opportunity to discover the seabed biodiversity of one of the best-preserved atolls in the Maldives. You will take part in initiatives such as “responsible snorkeling,” which is part of a broader monitoring framework. You will also discover one of the most beautiful coral nurseries in the entire Maldives archipelago, with the possibility of swimming among the numerous whale sharks, manta rays, and sea turtles present in the Baa Atoll.

TRAVEL PROGRAM

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN HULHUMALÉ

Upon arrival at Velana International Airport, you will be welcomed by our Maldivian representative who will provide an introductory briefing and accompany you to your hotel in Hulhumalé. Settle in after your flight before joining “Save the Beach” to discover the quieter side of city life by exploring the smaller island of Villimalé, located southwest of Malé. Our guide will meet you and accompany you by public ferry to Villimalé. Stroll through the peaceful streets, learn the names of local trees, and discover the conservation work carried out by “Save The Beach.” Before returning to Malé, we will take time to taste traditional “hedika” at a local beachfront café. Hedika is a traditional sweet and savory snack served with black tea and typically enjoyed between 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm. 30% of the fee is donated to Save the Beach.
Overnight: Hulhumalé (B, D)

DAY 2: TRANSFER TO FULHADHOO

In the morning you will be assisted in meeting and joining the scheduled speedboat departure at 1:00 pm, a two-hour journey northwest to reach the Baa Atoll and the island of Fulhadhoo. Upon arrival, a representative of the guesthouse will welcome you and accompany you to your accommodation, where you will spend the next 7 nights. Then it will be time to head to the beach for a sunset swim before dinner: your accommodation will be at your disposal.
Overnight: Fulhadhoo (B, D)

DAY 3: RESPONSIBLE SNORKELING

This day will be entirely dedicated to snorkeling. Your snorkeling guide will provide a briefing on responsible snorkeling and will act as a “spotter,” pointing out marine life that you might not otherwise notice. Coral reefs are fragile ecosystems, so learning how to snorkel responsibly can help minimize your impact on the marine environment and protect the delicate balance of marine life. Experts will assist less confident or inexperienced snorkelers, ensuring that the equipment is comfortable and that you feel safe in the water.
Overnight: Fulhadhoo (B, D)

DAY 4: RELAX ON THE ISLAND

This day is free to be enjoyed at your leisure. Relax on the bikini beach, choose to visit a resort for the day, or, for those feeling energetic, take part in the various optional water activities available. Optional diving excursions can be arranged for certified divers or, if you are a beginner, you may try a Discover Scuba Dive.
Overnight: Fulhadhoo (B, D)

DAY 5: VISIT TO THE CORAL “NURSERY”

After breakfast, visit the coral “nursery” of Fulhadhoo, where you will discover the history of the project and understand why coral rehabilitation initiatives are extremely important in the Maldives. You will witness firsthand the intricate process of coral propagation. The techniques used include fragment collection, care, and monitoring the growth of new coral colonies.
Overnight: Fulhadhoo (B, D)

DAY 6: ISLAND HOPPING (DISCOVERING THE ISLANDS)

Sandbank hopping and visit to an uninhabited island. After lunch, enjoy an idyllic journey through the Goidhoo Atoll, where you will discover a series of breathtaking white sandbanks. But the final destination awaiting you is a deserted island for a true Robinson Crusoe adventure. When you set foot on its shores, you will feel like an intrepid explorer discovering a place that seems to belong only to you. The island’s beaches will invite you to wander and explore their hidden corners. As the sun begins to set, casting shades of gold and orange across the sky, savor the local flavors of a traditional barbecue based on fish and coconut. We will also dedicate time to giving back to the community that has welcomed you by participating in a beach clean-up. This act of cleaning is a powerful reminder of the importance of responsible tourism and environmental stewardship. Your reward will be a refreshing swim in the ocean.
Overnight: Fulhadhoo (B, D)

DAY 7: RELAX

Free day to explore the island, relax on the beach, or go snorkeling. Possibility to independently arrange extra activities, such as diving or spa treatments.
Overnight: Fulhadhoo (B, D)

    Why don’t we include flights?
First of all, because we are a local tour operator and we directly organize all ground services during your trip. Secondly, because airfares change continuously, and the earlier you book, the less you pay. To include flights, we would need to calculate a “prudential” cost that would increase the total price of your travel package, preventing you from getting the best airfare available at the time of booking. For this reason, we prefer to leave you free to access the best conditions available when you book.
However, upon request, we can recommend the most convenient option so you can book your flight independently.

Have you already booked your flights? (required)

A travel agency we trust can hold your flights for around 48 hours, within which they must be confirmed. To do so, we need the first name, last name, and date of birth of all participants.
