It’s a taste of the natural reality that comes with your Maldives vacation. As you land, you are entering one of the world’s essential havens – a designated UNESCO biosphere reserve and home to incredible marine life and reefs. The style of the selected resort is rustic yet luxurious, organic yet elegant. Traditional craft blends with the ease of contemporary comfort. This is a soulful Maldives vacation spot where the everyday stresses of life are left behind, and you can reconnect with nature. During your stay you will have the possibility to relax, on white sands, swim and snorkel in crystal-clear waters and participate in many sustainable, cultural and conservation activities of the eco-resort. This will give you the opportunity not only to experience a deep relaxation in a tropical paradise, but also to discover the biological, natural, and cultural environment of this wonderful archipelago. In our resort, you will have the possibility to participate in many responsible activities for the environment, such as: Responsible Snorkelling, guided by a marine biologist, exploring the amazing Maldivian reefs and learn all about the different species that live in the waters around us. See the myriad characterful, colourful reef fish and the much-spotted timid Blacktip reef sharks; coral nursing, joining the marine biologists that since 2012 has taken naturally broken pieces of coral and planted them in the island’s lagoon, in areas where the corals flourish. Besides these environmental responsibility activities, there will be the opportunity to participate in activities in close contact with local culture and communities, such as meeting with the crafters at Thulhaadhoo in Baa Atoll, (30 minutes from Dhuni Kolhu), a famous destination for the work skills of its residents. These artisans are preserving a craft brought to the Maldives in the 17th Century. The pots, vases, ornaments, and boxes are exquisite examples of indigenous artistry. Watching the makers work their creative magic is a fascinating insight into ancient craftsmanship. As you tour the island, taking in the many shops and mosques, you are bound to see locals preparing and cooking classic Maldivian delicacies. Essentially, taking a trip to Thulhaadhoo will give you the chance to experience how Maldives locals genuinely live. While in Thulhaadhoo, if you would like to join a local family for afternoon tea, we can arrange in advance for you to be hosted. In the home of a Maldivian family, you will receive genuine welcoming warmth, traditional sweet black tea and delightful snacks known as Hedhikaa. For those who want to discover the Maldivian cuisine, there is the opportunity to experience the “Garden cuisine”, a signature Maldivian dinner at the garden, with our chefs taking you through each course as they explain the inspiration behind the exclusive menu. Learn more about traditional Maldivian cuisine as you toast to tastes you have never encountered before. You can find fresh ingredients such as where fresh basil, rosemary, eggplant, Scotch bonnet chilli and a selection of other herbs and vegetables are grown in the very own garden located in the middle of the island. This is such a great experience for food lovers and for chefs who wants to improve their skills introducing traditional Maldivian flavours in their cuisine. Also, for honeymooners, there will be the possibility to experience the Embudhoo escape. Embudhoo is a private deserted island, located just 15 minutes away from resort and it is home to a single traditional hut. Rustic and romantic, running away to this exclusive retreat for a few hours or an overnight stay is both a thrill and a privilege. Our chefs will prepare picnics so that your time on Embudhoo is delicious. Barbecues and group celebrations can also be arranged on Embudhoo, for the ultimate private party.

DESTINATION

Baa Atoll is an administrative division of the Maldives. It consists of three separate natural atolls, namely southern Maalhosmadulu Atoll (which is 42 km long and 32 km wide and consists of 9 inhabited islands), the Fasdūtherē Atoll (wedged in between the two Maalhosmadulu Atolls and separated from north Maalhosmasdulu Atoll by Hani Kandu or Moresby Channel) and the smaller natural atoll known as Goifulhafehendhu Atoll (Horsburgh Atoll in the Admiralty charts).
Situated on the west of the Maldives atoll chain, it consists of 75 islands of which 13 are inhabited with a population of over 11,000 people. The remaining 57 islands are uninhabited, in addition to eight islands being developed as resorts.
Baa Atoll as a biosphere reserve. The Maldives harbours globally-significant biodiversity in its numerous reefs and demonstrates a long history of human interaction with the environment. Covering approximately 139,700 ha of coastal/marine areas, the site is representative of the Maldives’ high diversity of reef animals, with hard and soft corals, reef-associated fish species, marine turtles, Manta Rays and Whale Sharks. In addition to its 12,170 inhabitants, some 350,000 tourists visit the biosphere reserve annually. As part of a Global Environment Facility (GEF) project, the site has great potential for demonstrating sustainable development throughout the Maldives and the region, while relying on a green economy.
The designation of Baa Atoll as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in June 2011 was a significant achievement for the Maldives, placing it in the company of world famous sites such as Komodo island in Indonesia, Uluru (Ayer’s Rock) in Australia and the Galápagos Islands.

DEPARTURE TIPS

Maldives, despite being a famous tourist destination, is a very orthodox and conservative state, therefore when outside the resort it is advised that you following carefully a code conduct which respects local culture to avoid any hassles or unwanted troubles along your journey. In particular, avoid to show affection in public places, such as hugging, kissing etc., as this behaviour is not appreciated by local people.
Guests should bring practical and informal summer clothes, without forgetting a sun hat, sun glasses, sun cream and rubber shoes. Dress code: both in daytime and in the evening, it is not permitted to enter the bar and restaurants in bathing suits or with wet clothes and guests are requested to always wear at least a T-shirt in these areas. In the evenings and after dinner, bermuda shorts and wraparound skirts are allowed. Guests are more than welcome to go barefooted anywhere on the hotel. Nudity is strictly forbidden.
Children are most welcome. Parents are kindly requested to look after their children avoiding situations which could spoil the tranquillity and atmosphere which is typical of the resort. We also recommend to avoid situations and activities which may lead to dangerous consequences. Children, who must be at least 8 years old, can take part in the Padi “bubble-maker” courses, whereas children, who must be at least 10 years old, can take the “junior open water diver” license.
It is absolutely forbidden to import underwater spear guns; sacred images or statuettes; pork meat or sausages; alcohol of any type; pornographic magazines; videos and DVDs’ (except for unused videos and DVDs still in their packaging). Nor is it allowed to bring in domestic animals of any kind. Very severe penalties are in force against the importation and use of drugs. It is strictly forbidden to export turtle shells, coral and shells not bought through legitimate commerce. In the interests of the environment, it is forbidden to break or walk on coral.
The reef appears to be like a rock, but in reality, it is a collection of millions of organisms: the touch of a fin for example may be sufficient to destroy many years of nature’s work. Some species of coral can cause injuries like cuts and blisters. For your safety and the one of the reef, we would like to encourage you not to stand, walk or swim too close to the barrier. It is forbidden by Maldivian law to collect coral, shells or sand from the Maldivian waters. The government is very strict about it and ignorance might very well end up in cash penalties. Alcohol is not allowed in local islands.
It is kindly requested that the guests bring back with them certain wastes such as empty tubes, used batteries, etc. that could damage the environment!

MALDIVES WHEN TO GO

The Maldives enjoy a year-round tropical climate, subject to the influence of the monsoons, winds that blow in different directions according to the seasons. December to May is considered to be the best time to visit Maldives. There are two seasons: the dry season of the “Iruvai”, monsoon from the Northeast, from December to May, and the rainy season of the “Hulhangu”, monsoon from the Southwest, from May to November. The wind that brings the rains blows from the southwest towards the northeast, whereas the winter monsoon (which brings the good weather) blows from the northeast to the southwest, bringing the dry season with little rain. Temperatures average 28°-31° all year round. The water temperature is always pleasant, around 27°-29°.
