11 days

This itinerary has been designed to give you the unique opportunity to discover all the main attractions of Kerala on an 11-day tour. There are countless reasons to visit Kerala: culture, forests and unspoiled beaches, backwaters and canals. This tour will offer you unique emotions amid the surreal atmosphere of the highlands, crystal-clear rivers, backwaters and beaches, while also giving you the opportunity to discover the traditions and culture of some of the most important cities in southern India, such as Mysore and Cochin. The discovery of traditions, nature and wildlife, together with interactions with local communities, will be the most important aspects on which this program is based.

This journey will focus on encounters with local communities, culture and wilderness. You will discover Kerala’s cultural heritage through the arts, attending traditional performances such as Kathakali and others. You will have the chance to experience these traditional arts on the banks of the Nila River and in Cochin, while in Mysore you will visit incredible examples of Dravidian architecture.

The tour begins in the city of Mysore, one of the main tourist cities in Karnataka. The city was the former capital of the state and therefore played an extremely important role in the history of the state and southern India. Today it has developed into a modern city without losing its rich historical and cultural heritage, with a variety of royal buildings, gardens, waterfalls, temples, museums and modern amusement parks.

From here, you will enter the state of Kerala, where, in addition to visiting major tourist destinations such as Kochi and Kumarakom, you will have the opportunity to discover the beauty of nature and the unique traditions of this state. You will spend your first two days in Kerala in the scenic and unspoiled hill region of Wayanad, where you will be hosted in a local village, enjoying authentic experiences in close contact with local communities, farmers, artists and artisans: a true immersion in the culture and traditions of Kerala.

This tour will allow you to experience Kerala in all its richness, while giving you the chance to relax during the last five days in the Lakshadweep Archipelago on one of the most beautiful and famous islands of the state, where you will stay at an authentic 3-star resort located on the beach of Thinnakara Island, or enjoy total relaxation at a 4-star beach resort on Bangaram.

SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

This itinerary has been designed to promote direct or indirect benefits for local communities, the environment, and cultural heritage. Wherever possible, traditional accommodation providers that are sensitive to social and environmental issues have been selected, following the general principles and practices of responsible tourism. In Wayanad, spice plantation tours have been included to support small farmers in and around the Wayanad area, thus providing alternative and supplementary sources of income. This is also intended to offer an insight into the issues surrounding the struggles of spice growers caused by falling prices and globalization. Here, you will visit the Bamboo Village, an initiative created by two local organizations – Uravu and Kabani – with the aim of providing alternative sources of income to the residents of Thrikkaipetta through tourism. In particular, Kabani promotes a homestay programme, which includes hospitality training for local residents. Local families provide their hospitality services on a rotating basis, in order to ensure equal opportunities for all members of the community. Uravu supports social enterprises based on the value of local natural resources, especially bamboo, the “green gold,” by implementing integrated end-to-end programmes in the bamboo sector, including vocational training in bamboo craftsmanship, the creation of micro-enterprises, the marketing of bamboo handicrafts, bamboo cultivation, and the promotion of ecotourism. In the Nila River area, you will visit Kerala Kalamandalam, a special university where it is possible to study the ancient performing arts of Kerala, as well as meet traditional artisans working in textiles and pottery. In this way, you will be able to observe traditional crafts, with the opportunity to experience this art first-hand by trying to create your own souvenir. This is an initiative in collaboration with the Vayali Folklore Group of Arangottukkra, committed to preserving Kerala folklore through support for artists and their families. In Cochin, meanwhile, the Kerala Kathakali Center promotes the safeguarding and celebration of India’s rich heritage of ancient art and culture. In Kumarakom, you will take part in a responsible tourism initiative called “Village Life Experience,” organized by the Kerala Responsible Tourism Mission (government agency). Among the four destinations where Responsible Tourism (RT) has been introduced in the state, Kumarakom is considered the most successful example, through the implementation of community-based tourism products and services. In addition, your contribution of 70 euros will support development projects benefiting one of the most marginalized tribal communities in India. Tribal communities are still on the margins of Indian society, and for this reason there are two main funded projects: 1) to preserve biological and cultural diversity, and 2) to promote the education of children belonging to the Kattunayakan community in the Nilgiri district of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

TRAVEL TIPS

It is advisable to behave in a way that respects the local culture, in order to avoid any problems or difficulties during the journey. In particular, overly affectionate behaviour in public, such as kissing or hugging, is discouraged, as this attitude is not well regarded. Smoking is considered offensive and is punishable by law. Although this may come as a surprise, there is a ban on smoking in public places in Kerala. If you are a smoker, please remember that you may only smoke in your room, if permitted by the hotel.

It is preferable to wear appropriate clothing for two reasons: to avoid offending local people and to protect yourself from unstable weather conditions. In addition, there is the issue of mosquitoes; it is recommended to keep your arms and legs covered and to carry insect repellent with you, especially during boat trips. India’s time zone is GMT/UTC +5:30, so jet lag may also cause some discomfort. Setting your watch to Indian time even before arrival can be helpful, as can eating and sleeping according to the local time. If you arrive in India in the morning, making an effort to stay awake will help your internal clock adjust.

A conscious approach to travel requires a considerable ability and willingness to adapt to the local culture and environment. If you wish to travel with us, we ask you to have an attitude of complete openness towards the local culture, religion and traditions, setting aside any prejudice or pre-existing ideas derived from our Western way of thinking. Looking at Kerala with fresh eyes, patience and openness will allow you to see the authentic essence of the country’s cultural heritage through the places and people you encounter.

With this small effort, you will truly be able to enjoy the beauty of a completely different culture, the wonder of nature, the solemnity of temples and palaces, and the sacredness of the waters of the countless rivers flowing through this magical land.

WHEN TO GO

Kerala has a tropical climate and, although it is pleasant throughout the year, the best time to visit is from October to March. These are the peak season months. The monsoon season lasts from June to September and, although the heavy rains discourage many tourists, visiting Kerala during this period is a wonderful experience. It is also an excellent time for Ayurvedic treatments. April and May are very hot and humid, as they are the months preceding the rainy season. However, May is the right month to witness the famous Thrissur Pooram elephant festival.

For this reason, we prefer to leave you free to access the best conditions available when you book.
However, upon request, we can recommend the most convenient option so you can book your flight independently.
