Eco-Luxury Experience in Kerala and the Maldives

14 days

This exclusive itinerary, which we like to call an eco-luxury experience, has been carefully crafted by Conscious Journeys experts in each destination to give those who choose to travel with us the opportunity to take part in a truly unique journey. In designing this itinerary, we worked closely with local hoteliers, people with deep knowledge of and passion for their land, which for them is simply home. For this reason, this tour represents a life experience that will allow you to discover hidden places, traditional arts, culture, activities, and the local cuisine of each destination. This itinerary has been designed thanks to personal experience, direct knowledge, and the reliable advice of those who live in the area, offering a unique stay in India that goes far beyond the typical tourist itinerary. We have curated exclusive experiences in every destination by “staying” in historic and unique eco-luxury properties, which will allow you to feel a deep connection with the place and enjoy a special stay in close contact with nature. The selected eco-resorts are respectfully integrated into the environment, with particular attention to every detail, which is typical of Kerala hospitality. Therefore, with our curated selection of exceptional properties and exclusive activities across India, this tour will offer you a unique and unforgettable holiday. Our resorts and lodges are more than just places to sleep… they are truly special places where unique experiences come to life.

This itinerary has been designed to give you the unique opportunity to discover all the main attractions of Kerala on a 10-day tour. There are countless reasons to visit Kerala: culture, forests and unspoiled beaches, backwaters and canals. This tour will offer you unique emotions amid the surreal atmosphere of the highlands, crystal-clear rivers, backwaters and beaches, while also giving you the opportunity to discover the traditions and culture of some of the most important cities in southern India, such as Mysore and Cochin. The discovery of traditions, nature and wildlife, together with interactions with local communities, will be the most important aspects on which this program is based. This journey will focus on encounters with local communities, culture and wilderness. You will discover Kerala’s cultural heritage through the arts, attending traditional performances such as Kathakali and others. You will have the opportunity to discover these traditional arts on the banks of the Nila River and in Cochin, while in Munnar you will be able to admire some of the most famous and scenic tea plantations in the world, with the chance to taste this unique product. This tour will begin and end in Cochin, also known as the Gateway to Kerala, and its majestic panoramic views make it a perfect tourist destination. Kochi is a small place in Kerala, also known as God’s Own Country and famous for its green pastures and beautiful landscapes. From here, you will have the opportunity to visit the wonderful tea plantations of Munnar and taste one of the most famous teas in the world. From there, the tour will continue to Periyar National Park, one of the most beautiful in India, located in Thekkady; you will then visit Kumarakom and its beautiful rainforests and famous lagoons.

The tour continues with one night in Kovalam and a direct flight to the authentic island of Hanimaadhoo, in the unspoiled northern Maldives. Here, our 4-star eco-resort blends rustic style with contemporary comfort, offering complete privacy along more than 500 metres of private beach. It is a retreat designed to reconnect with nature and discover the true Maldivian culture. You will be able to relax on white sandy beaches or take part in eco-responsible activities: from snorkelling guided by marine biologists to spot tropical fish and blacktip reef sharks, to visiting the coral nursery for coral replanting. You will also enjoy direct contact with the local community, collaborating with an NGO dedicated to preserving the coral reef and discovering the authentic lifestyle of the archipelago.

TRAVEL OVERVIEW AND PROGRAM DETAILS

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN COCHIN

Fort Cochin
Arrival in Cochin and meeting with our representatives at the terminal, followed by transfer to the hotel for check-in. Fort Cochin is a jewel in Kerala’s crown, with its European heritage and truly cosmopolitan character. A pleasant walk through its streets is one of the best ways to discover all that the city has to offer: its natural harbour and historic sites. In the evening, if you wish, you may enjoy a walk around the city before checking in to a beautiful heritage resort named after the lighthouse standing opposite the property, Tower House. The resort dates back to the 17th century and has been restored while maintaining uncompromising principles in the practical use of materials and forms. The renovation of The Tower House was guided by the same values: being true to the time in which we live while respecting the past, setting new standards in heritage tourism. It has been restored to meet present-day needs while preserving its structural integrity, reflecting different historical periods. Its eclectic furnishings, reminiscent of rooms from another era, and the colonial pillars supporting its vast halls are a testament to the importance of preserving the history of this remarkable property.
Overnight stay in Fort Cochin.

In the evening, you will attend a cultural show and Kathakali performance at a local cultural centre. Here you will be able to appreciate the wonders of Kerala’s art forms. The Kerala Kathakali Centre is dedicated to preserving and celebrating India’s rich heritage of ancient art and culture. Kathakali is a traditional performing art distinguished by the elaborate and colourful make-up and costumes of the actor-dancers. Traditional Kathakali themes include folk tales, religious legends, and spiritual ideas drawn from the Hindu epics and the Puranas.

The Periyar Tiger Reserve, which covers an area of 777 square kilometres, is one of the 27 tiger reserves in India. It is considered an example of nature’s generosity, with great scenic charm, rich biodiversity, and is truly rewarding for visitors. SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

The entire itinerary has been designed to promote direct or indirect benefits for local communities, the environment, and cultural heritage. We have selected luxury eco-resorts built with natural materials that blend perfectly with the ecological setting in which they are located. All eco-lodges and eco-resorts are sensitive to social and environmental issues, following the general principles and practices of responsible tourism, and this will provide insight into the challenges affecting these natural environments as a result of globalization. Here, you will take part in community-based responsible tourism initiatives launched and carried forward by local organizations. In Kumarakom, you will experience a responsible tourism initiative called “Village Life Experience,” organized by the government Nodal Agency for Responsible Tourism. Among the four destinations where Responsible Tourism (RT) has been introduced in the state, Kumarakom is considered the most successful example of a project linking community-based tourism products and services. In addition, your contribution of 70 euros will support development projects benefiting one of the most marginalized tribal communities in India. Tribal communities are still on the margins of Indian society, and for this reason the two main funded projects are: 1) preserving biological and cultural diversity, and 2) promoting formal education for children belonging to the Kattunayakan community of the Nilgiri district of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. In Mararikulam, you will gain an overview of Kerala’s majestic biodiversity, guided by the naturalist of the Marari Beach resort. This is a special opportunity to better understand the complex ecosystems that define the unique ecology of the Malabar coast, with its 97 recorded species of butterflies, 350 species of endemic plants, 3 varieties of turtles, 10 types of frogs, and around 80 species of birds that you may encounter, depending on the season.

TIPS BEFORE DEPARTURE

It is advisable to behave in a way that respects the local culture, in order to avoid any problems or difficulties during the journey. In particular, overly affectionate behaviour in public, such as kissing or hugging, is discouraged, as this attitude is not well regarded. Smoking is considered offensive and is punishable by law. Although this may come as a surprise, there is a ban on smoking in public places in Kerala. If you are a smoker, please remember that you may only smoke in your room, if permitted by the hotel.

It is preferable to wear appropriate clothing for two reasons: to avoid offending local people and to protect yourself from unstable weather conditions. In addition, there is the issue of mosquitoes; it is recommended to keep your arms and legs covered and to carry insect repellent with you, especially during boat trips. India’s time zone is GMT/UTC +5:30, so jet lag may also cause some discomfort. Setting your watch to Indian time even before arrival can be helpful, as can eating and sleeping according to the local time. If you arrive in India in the morning, making an effort to stay awake will help your internal clock adjust.

A conscious approach to travel requires a considerable ability and willingness to adapt to the local culture and environment. If you wish to travel with us, we ask you to have an attitude of complete openness towards the local culture, religion and traditions, setting aside any prejudice or pre-existing ideas derived from our Western way of thinking. Looking at Kerala with fresh eyes, patience and openness will allow you to see the authentic essence of the country’s cultural heritage through the places and people you encounter.

With this small effort, you will truly be able to enjoy the beauty of a completely different culture, the wonder of nature, the solemnity of temples and palaces, and the sacredness of the waters of the countless rivers flowing through this magical land.

HOTELS

HOTEL CATEGORY: LUXURY HERITAGE RESORTS AND ECO-RESORTS
For this experience, we have selected beautiful heritage hotels and eco-resorts, representing the best choice in each destination. All the selected accommodations will give you the opportunity to discover the essence of the place where you stay and to experience the true hospitality of Kerala. In addition, all the properties have been carefully chosen according to social and environmental impact criteria.
In particular, for each destination we have selected the following properties:

Cochin: Tower House
Tower House stands opposite the Chinese fishing nets, marking the site of a 17th-century lighthouse from which it takes its name. Once, cannonballs were fired from its thick bastion walls. Its twin house, with shell-lime walls, looks rather like a ship. And indeed, boats were once brought in with the high tide and parked downstairs in its stable and dry dock. Since 1982, it has been owned by Peirce Leslie. The furnishings are an eclectic mix, with no attempt to recreate rooms from any single period or style, because the structure itself has evolved over time. It is the light streaming through the windows, the skylights, and the vastness of the interior spaces that make the experience unforgettable. Most of the rooms in our Cochin hotel feature large four-poster beds and bathrooms with generously sized bathtubs and windows overlooking the trees or the sea, depending on their position. It has been restored to meet present-day needs while preserving its structural integrity. It reflects different historical periods rather than being artificially faithful to just one. It takes you back in time, where moods and memories intertwine to create a fabric that is strong yet delicately adaptable. The same uncompromising principles in the practical use of materials and forms also guided the restoration of The Tower House, and it is this adherence to the values of being honest to the time in which we live while respecting the past that has set new standards in heritage tourism. Discover old-world charm in our hotel in Kochi, where sailors, travellers, merchants, and planters once dined and danced beneath chandeliers hanging from high wooden ceilings.

Periyar: Spice Village

Spice Village is modelled on the dwellings of the native Mannan tribe of this region and exudes the raw spirit of unspoiled nature. This CGH Earth experience is a seamless extension of the surrounding lush landscape and celebrates everything that is spiced: from our exclusive culinary offerings enriched with spices to the spice tours that help bring our guests closer to the land and its people.

Kumarakom: Coconut Lagoon
Coconut Lagoon is located on Lake Vembanad, one of the largest inland lakes in India, with its distinctive environment that shelters remarkable biodiversity. There is only one way to reach Coconut Lagoon: across the lake. From the private jetty, about a kilometre upstream, you will take a boat ride over the gentle waters of the lake, past swaying coconut palms and village houses, until you arrive at the resort. If you are a bird lover, then Coconut Lagoon is a perfect destination for birdwatching, thanks to its extraordinary variety of birdlife. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the cottages at Coconut Lagoon are true works of art. They have been built from the remains of ancient mansions — tharavads — which were once the ancestral homes of noble families. They were transported here in sections and meticulously reassembled by skilled craftsmen so that guests of the resort can experience first-hand what it means to live in these ancient and celebrated dwellings of the past. Here, you will find a unique piece of unspoiled “forest,” in full respect of nature and centuries-old traditions.

Kumarakom: Spice Coast Cruise (houseboat)
The Spice Coast Cruise will give you a taste of the unique way of life that once existed in these regions. You will travel on a “Kettuvallam,” a traditional houseboat that was once used for centuries to transport loads of rice and spices up and down these very waterways. The service and food you will find on board also faithfully reflect a fading backwater tradition, one to be experienced and savoured first-hand. With some imaginative modifications, these vessels have been transformed into majestic houseboats that sail through the calm waters of the vast and enchanting Lake Vembanad. Made from natural materials, these spice boats are powered by solar energy and vegetable oils to reduce their impact on the lake. The crew is made up of humble fishermen, men who have known these waters since a very young age. However, they do much more than simply steer these large vessels, alternating between navigating the waterways, preparing meals for guests on board, and generally keeping everything in order. Their smiling faces reflect a culture renowned for its gentle and gracious manner. This is indeed spontaneous hospitality, or what we call “hospitality from the heart.”
